A Very, Very Short Review: The Sound Of Metal

Originally, I wasn’t going to review The Sound of Metal, but – wow. It’s not half bad, so I felt I had to give it the service it deserves.

Of course, I’m a little late to the party here, but of an inferior pack of films up for the 2021 Oscars, The Sound of Metal is the best I’ve seen so far. Riz Ahmed plays Ruben Stone, a heavy-metal (I think you can call it that – yikes) drummer who loses his hearing, and he’s nothing short of brilliant. Easy casting would be someone white, so it’s refreshing to see a British-Pakistani actor chosen not just because of his race, but just because he’s really good at what he does.

Even better is the use of sound, so interestingly utilised that it almost becomes another character. Right from the get go…
